Spending written in the stars.jpg

Consumer spending habits written in the stars

Our spending habits may be written in the stars, according to the results of our latest research, in which analysed £5bn worth of loans to our customers.

People born under the astrological sign of Taurus, which is associated with acquisitive behaviour, borrowed the most in total, while Scorpios borrowed the least.

Taureans, who are said to have an appetite for the finer things in life, valuing the quality of the possessions surrounding them, spent more than anyone else on furniture and home improvements.

They also took the most loans to pay for education, healthcare and jewellery, reflecting their alleged tendency to pamper themselves.

Hitachi Personal Finance marketing manager Theresa Lindsay says: "The research shows that we’re pretty consistent when it comes to our spending habits, which was quite a surprise over such a long period.  With Taureans being the biggest spenders and Scorpios the lowest over the five years, maybe this says more about our personalities than we think.”

Scorpios, noted for their resourcefulness and regarded as the most mysterious sign in the zodiac, borrowed the least overall, with education, furniture and jewellery being low down on their list.

On the other hand, Cancerians, said to gravitate towards anything capable of evoking strong emotion, were responsible for the most car loans.

Despite its members being associated with practical qualities, the star sign Sagittarius came last in spending on home improvement, electrical and miscellaneous items, leaving Aquarius, Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo and Libra out of the table of highest and lowest spenders.
