Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions reduces carbon footprint in one weekThursday, 18 June 2009Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions recently celebrated Enviroweek. The first week of its kind at Hitachi Capital was launched to encourage its staff to think about being more environmentally friendly. Employees used video conferencing, which saved nearly 8,500 miles in non-essential business travel in one week. This would have generated approximately 2038 kilos of carbon emissions, the equivalent of the production of 10,193 plastic bags! Staff were emailed daily tips on how to reduce their carbon footprint and environmental impact during the week, by making small changes to their work and home life. An alternative transport day rounded off Enviroweek with colleagues sharing lifts to work and people biking and walking instead of driving. Since Enviroweek, priority parking spaces have been allocated for staff willing to car share and an increase in recycling has also been seen. Staff have become more aware with lights and air conditioning being turned off in meeting rooms and offices when not in use and people are thinking before they press ”print”. Simon Oliphant, Chief Executive, Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions said: “It was great to see everyone get involved with Enviroweek. We had a fantastic response with people offering all sorts of suggestions as to how we can be greener, reduce waste and save money. We look forward to a bigger and better Enviroweek in 2010.”
